Project Description

I-205 at NE Airport Way Interchange

Portland, Oregon

Start Date: December 2012
End Date: Late 2014

Question: What is the location of the most congested intersection in the state of Oregon?
Answer: The I-205 at NE Airport Way Interchange

oregon_portlandThe interchange at I-205 and NE Airport Way provides an important connection for travelers to Portland’s International Airport (PDX) as well as for the movement of regional goods onto the interstate system. During the evening commute, there is more traffic entering I-205 northbound than at any other location in Oregon. This demand had resulted in significant congestion on Airport Way and on the surrounding streets. ODOT and the Port of Portland agreed to work to relieve the problem and in late 2012, Hamilton Construction was selected to add a new right turn ramp from westbound Airport Way to northbound I-205. The postage stamp size work staging area, the intense traffic, and the location in an FAA controlled flight path of PDX made the project especially challenging.
