Start Date: June 2013
End Date: Spring 2015
The purpose of this project was to improve safety and connectivity by constructing an east – west arterial in the south end of Bend and eliminating the traffic signals at the intersections of U.S. Highway 97 at Pinebrook Boulevard and U.S. 97 at 3rd Street – a notorious bottleneck. Work included road realignments, two new bridges, and construction of three roundabouts.
The elimination of the “signalized” intersections at Third Street and Pinebrook Boulevard on U.S. 97 was designed to alleviate congestion and increase mobility in the corridor and greatly reduce the crashes at these locations, which were some of the highest in central Oregon.
The U.S. 97/Murphy Road project was a high priority for the City of Bend, Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization, ODOT Region 4, and the Central Oregon Area Commission on Transportation.
