oregon_portlandThis was the second phase of an extensive stream and environmental restoration project in Southeast Portland’s Westmoreland Park along Crystal Springs Creek. The focus of this project managed by the US Army Corp of Engineers was the restoration of Crystal Springs Creek from its existing condition as a series of stagnant ponds, back to a free flowing natural channel. The other major work element on the project included the replacement of existing culverts at Tacoma Street with a new single span bridge, similar to the Phase I structures both in terms of aesthetics and as improved fish passage structures. Work in this area also included re-establishment of native plants as well as amenities for park users of the human variety including a new wooden boardwalk, park benches, picnic tables, and natural play areas.

Interesting Factoid: Crystal Springs from mouth to headwaters measures 2.7 miles and is entirely spring fed, leaving the water untainted by urban run-off. The clean water, constant year round flow, and low water temperatures make this a potential sanctuary for the area’s threatened salmon once restoration is accomplished.
